Display advertising

Display advertising is a widely used form of advertising that involves placing visual ad formats on webpages or apps to promote brands, services, or products. These ads can take various forms, including images, text, videos, or GIFs, and are distributed across display networks, which consist of websites, videos, and apps where ads can appear. Display networks enable marketers to target specific audiences, contexts, locations, and more. Examples of display networks include the Google Display Network, Taboola, and Criteo.

Additionally, there are ad exchanges, digital marketplaces where buyers and sellers engage in real-time bidding to buy and sell ad space. Ad exchanges aggregate ad inventory from multiple publishers and display networks, and agencies and advertisers typically bid on impressions through demand-side platforms like Xandr, OpenX, Magnite, Pubmatic, and Google Ad Manager.

There are several types of display ads:

Image ads: These are static JPG, PNG, or animated GIF files displayed on websites. They effectively convey product usefulness through visuals.

Text ads: These are simple text-only ads that appear on websites.

Responsive ads: These automatically adjust their size and format to fit available space. They can also appear as native ads, seamlessly blending with website content.

App promotion ads: These drive app downloads and engagement by directing users to app stores for easy downloads. They only appear on compatible devices.

In terms of the marketing funnel, display ads are typically used during the awareness and consideration stages to drive awareness and expand the customer base. Additionally, display ads are utilized further down the funnel for remarketing purposes. Remarketing involves delivering ads to users who have previously visited a website or social media profile, aiming to increase conversions and retain loyal customers. Display advertising thus plays a vital role in a comprehensive digital marketing strategy by reaching potential customers at various stages of their journey and driving engagement and conversions.
